San Diego Supermarket to Use UTC Clean Energy

"An Albertsons supermarket in San Diego will be generating 90 percent of its electricity with a 400-kilowatt fuel cell from UTC Power, a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX) company.

The eco-friendly store plans to open on September 1, 2010 in the Clairemont community and is projected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 478 metric tons each year. Nitrogen oxide reduction is equal to removing 82 cars from the roadways per year.

Albertsons Director of Environmental Stewardship Rick Crandall noted, ""When it comes to minimizing our environmental footprint, the Clairemont store is a tremendous achievement for us, With the assistance of UTC Power's fuel cell, it's our first store that significantly reduces its burden on the power grid.""

The cell will be used to warm water in the store, heat the store and power a chiller for the refrigerated food, which will result in overall energy efficiency of about 60 percent, nearly twice the efficiency of the U.S. electrical grid. Power outages will have no effect on the store, as electricity is generated on-site.

United Technologies Corp. is currently trading 0.90 percent lower at $65.94.
